gone green

well my template just went down the drain!

Sundays can be dangerous!  Having more time to play today, I tried to be creative with my template and, in the process,  wound up losing it altogether.  Unfortunately, I'm busy with the latest corrections for my book ARTE PER MASSAIE (art for housewives in Italian) and, at the moment, don't have time to dedicate to a new template.  Please be patient until I can fix it (and you have to scroll down for the side bar!)

In the meantime:

The oil used to cook fries at Carl's Jr. restaurants in Arizona is getting a second life as fuel for the fast-food chain's vehicles. The company that franchises most Carl's Jr. outlets in the state plans to convert its fleet, including cars and trucks used by repair technicians and regional vice presidents, to run on waste vegetable oil instead of gas by 2010.   via everyday trash  which offers many other interesting links including:

John Preble has, thousands of times; and it wasn’t only rocks, there were bottles, bottle caps, license plates, springs, motors, pottery shards, and “what all.” And he didn’t throw any of it away, instead it all eventually came together in the fantastic man-made world known as the Abita Mystery House in Abita Springs, Louisiana.

...it's only rock'n'roll....

Well I'm very happy today because I just ordered my tickets to the Rolling Stones A BIGGER BANG concert here in Rome  July 6!

The homeowner is a big Stones fan who simply had to have the Stones logo painted in the center of his inground swimming pool.  Give the People what they want! It's only rock and roll but I like it.

About 1830 James Burrows invented the twin techniques of stickware and half- square mosaic. Stickware articles, such as pincushions, were turned from blocks composed of differently coloured wooden sticks of triangular and diamond shaped cross section. Half-square mosaic consisted of thin slices from similar blocks used as veneers to decorate boxes and other items. Stickware remained popular throughout the life of the industry, but half-square was not much used after 1840 as it was a step on the way to a perfected mosaic technique

Another way to recycled is by swapping.  The last time Chiara was in Paris, she stayed with friends whose apartment building had a large box near the main door. Saviour Scraps is a Brooklyn based art collaborative that works with donated and reused fabric to create fantastical environments in immersive site-specific installations. Because fabric contains powerful personal and collective memories, it serves as a medium through which the artists can explore the cycle of creation and exchange. The installations create an atmosphere that overwhelms and intrigues the viewer to become a participant by interacting with the art and making the experience their own.

Tammis Keefe is one of the great names of hankie collecting. She was born in 1920, and began designing for Kimbal scarves in 1953. Her designs are typically 1950s - full of whimsy and those great 50s colors: pink, turquoise, gold and black.       Keefe's designs were often inspired by her travels. One can find Oriental, Arabian nights, and European castle themed hankies. "Crocheted Snow" ,  A self-described "art-farmer living part of the year in an urban nest [New York City] and part of the year on a farm in Tuscany", Abigail Doan's artwork interconnects her experience of place using natural fibers and plant material. Often as ephemeral interventions, carefully photographed, her projects coalesce tenuous layers of thought with the fragile beauty of vegetation and the outdoors.
