dressing up

Clothing is a powerful metaphor for the cycle
of life, a new dress is fresh and beautiful, worn for a special occasion, then it ends up in the back of the closet where it fades and is eventually cast aside.   nancy youdelman dresses

Pique-assiette: Just what is pique assiette mosaic? The short answer is that pique assiette is a style of mosaic that incorporates pieces of broken ceramics - plates, dishes, cups, tiles - and other found objects into the design. The longer answer, to think about the appeal and expressiveness of pique assiette, must take in ideas of lateral thinking, humour, the art of recycling, and the significance of found objects---previous art for housewives mosaic links----In a fit of pique / Now when you feel like breaking something, go ahead, be creative-----My pieces are made mostly from very old china shards collected from area antique shops, junk stores, our local Salvation Army Store, E-bay, tag sales, estate auctions, and from the basements and attics of friends and clients-----A Pagosan's Passion for Pique----

qualia Everything - matter, energy, you name it - comes from curvatures, patterns and other properties originating at the Planck scale. If consciousness does have some fundamental, irreducible precursor it must originate as some sort of pattern at the same basic level of the universe. Philosophers call the raw components of conscious experience qualia. We're suggesting that qualia are specific patterns or properties at the Planck scale. Why not? If there's something fundamental and irreducible about consciousness or its precursors, as Spinoza and Whitehead said, then it has to exist somewhere. The Planck scale is all there is.

give your man some thread.....

Ariadne's Thread and the Labyrinth in Classical Mythology---- Ariadne's thread, named for the legend of Ariadne, is the term used to describe the solving of a problem with multiple apparent means of proceeding - such as a physical maze, a logic puzzle, or an ethical dilemma - through an exhaustive application of logic to all available routes. It is the particular method used that is able to follow completely through to trace steps or take point by point a series of found truths in a contingent, ordered search that reaches a desired end position. This process can take the form of a mental record, a physical marking, or even a philosophical debate; it is the process itself that assumes the name.-----Ariadne, in the Greek version the daughter of Minos, fell in love with Theseus and helped him get out of the labyrinth by giving him a ball of thread, allowing him to retrace his path------Ariadne's Thread  in the Hand of Karlheinz Essl--------The Triumph of Adriadne--------Arianna, figlia di Monosse e quindi sorella, per via di madre, del Minotauro; s'innamorò dell'eroe ateniese Teseo che uccise il mostro per liberare la città di Atene da un sanguinoso tributo umano impostole da Minosse. Fu grazie all'innamorata fanciulla che l'eroe poté uscire dal labirinto nel quale aveva ucciso l'uomo-bestia che vi era imprigionato, dipanando verso l'uscita un gomitolo di filo (il filo d'Arianna).

My first encounter with these mazes was around 1982, when the labyrinthologist Jean-Louis Bourgeois showed me the maze game. He told me this game is widespread in the folk cultures of Asia; it is extremely old, since this very same design occurs on Cretan coins of the 4th-5th century BC, where it symbolizes the Labyrinth in which the Minotaur was kept. (In fact, there are much earlier examples) The legend has it that Theseus found his way out of the Labyrinth by following a thread he had unwound from a spool given to him by his sweetheart Ariadne, and so a line drawn so as to trace the path through a maze like this is often called ``Ariadne's thread.''

Or back away ten feet. spools of thread computer mosaic by ken knowlton....Knowlton's portrait consists of 945 inch-long multicolored spools of thread alternately oriented vertically and horizontally. They give the impression, from intermediate distances, of woven fabric. This artwork, therefore, has three levels of interpretation: a portrait, a woven fabric, and spools of thread.

medicine bundles & healing dolls & plastic bags

Why not make a medicine bundle?  A  MEDICINE BUNDLE is a carrying case made of animal hide which held things that had a special meaning to the owner; made after a vision quest.....think of those lovely bundles made by Judith Scott.
OutsiderOutsider: The Life and Art of Judith Scott
When I look at the art of Judith Scott, I see powerful messages from a being refusing to be held captive by a barely functional mind and body. She is a fifty-five year old mentally handicapped woman with Down's Syndrome, who cannot hear or speak. For the past ten years, she has been creating abstract fiber structures, often larger than she is, each involving months of dedicated work. The detail on these pieces shows extraordinary patience and care.-----judith scott----judith scott----Judith Scott (détail)-----con la participación de Judith Scott.------From depression to Down's Syndrome, "Treasures of the Soul" explores thecreative impulses and works of the mentally troubled -----

A medicine bundle is a wrapped package used by Native Americans for religious purposes. A package of this type can also be referred to as a medicine bag. Medicine bundles are usually employed as a ritual aid in Shamanistic religions. The size of a medicine bundle generally varies from 2 to 14 inches in length, but could be larger.

All Indian men had a "medicine bag", much as a white woman has a purse. Like the purse, the medicine bag -- which might be three or four feet long -- contained objects and substances which had a meaning for the owner. Mementos of events which occurred during his vision quest as a young lad would certainly be there. As years went by "souvenirs" were added. ----

Although most think of voodoo dolls as a tool for use in harmful magic, there are many beneficial outcomes for use of the voodoo doll, healing, prosperity, even love.

 HEALING GODDESS DOLL

These dolls are created to address a specific area that a person desires to heal, physical, emotional, mental or spiritual.  The intention of the healing is placed in the doll in her inner body using stones, charms, hair from the person being healed, and other objects that represent the intention.   The doll itself is a manifestation of the healing intention through color, fabric, beads, etc.  The dolls are inspired by the Divine Feminine and Mother Mary.  They are powerful tools for healing physical illness for they carry the affirmation that one is already healed and whole.

March 2004 - The raddiwallahs – collectors of household waste – cycle down dusty lanes chanting soporific sing-songs encouraging people to sell them their recyclable waste. While they make a living collecting our waste, they also, perhaps unintentionally, make the most crucial contribution to the cycle of waste collection and recycling in the country. Where does our raddiwallah offload his burden? What happens to our oiled newspapers, old books, and crumpled mineral water bottles? Where does the reincarnation of waste take place? ---

Karin Carter.....Karin Carter’s clothes are trashy. We mean that as a compliment. Her “sustainable fashion,” in the form of a leathery, waterproof fabric made from recycled plastic grocery bags, is poised to bring environmentalism to the runway. Carter, who invented the fabric, has already made a line of colorful purses and rain gear and hopes to extend the idea to lampshades, shower curtains and umbrellas. She’s also transformed packing peanuts into insulation for a parka that doubles as a sleeping bag. Eco-conscious campers, take note.

With the intent to create fashion out of refuse, the biggest challenge was to disguise the raw material. Collected bags were cut, looped, woven, crocheted, sewn, heat-formed and/or fused together to explore durability, texture, appearance and the protective quality of the material. ----more------even more----Karin Carter (MS '02 ENG: Product Design) is a materials designer on the Advanced Innovation Team in Nike’s apparel division near Portland, Ore. ----This past May, Material ConneXion presented its second-annual design conference, entitled TERRA MATTER: Inspire Innovate Sustain----Buildings made of spiders’ webs, sandals that clean the earth, crockery constructed from corn, furniture that is grown rather than manufactured, and garbage bag mini-skirts-----

An amazing project in Delhi, endeavouring to provide income for the urban poor, has developed a unique and energy-efficient method for recycling discarded polythene plastic bags. Plastic litter is becoming a major problem in India with all kinds of consequences ? many cows die from ingesting polythene. Through this fantastic project, artisans are trained (from collection to production) to create coloured sheets of handmade recycled plastic that are pieces of art in themselves. However, with the aid of talented designers, the sheets are turned into beautiful, useful products. Even colours within the materials are created by the clever amalgamation of the original coloured plastic.

Tatting is an ancient needlecraft dating back for centuries. Practiced in the Far East and Europe. It is made with one or more shuttles or a shuttle and a ball. The shuttle with a sharp blade-like "pick" at one end is the most practical type. This pick is used to draw the thread thorough a picot when joinings are made. If  you use a shuttle without a pick, it will be necessary to use a pin or crochet hook each time to pull the thread through in joining, which will slow up your work. The ends of the shuttle should be tight enough that the thread will not unwind if the shuttle is dropped.
