Rag crochet has been widely practiced in the mountains of Appalachia for many years, because all the bits and pieces of worn fabrics were too precious to waste. Just as early quilters valued every little scrap of fabric, so, too, the mountain women crocheted their own type of patchwork with long strips of fabric, cut from garments or household items. As the strips were cut fairly wide, the crochet had to be done with a large hook. These were not commercially available until recent years, so the menfolk—husbands, brothers, perhaps even suitors—carefully carved primitive hooks from local woods. These charming tokens, usually well worn from hours of use, can often be found at flea markets and antique shops. ----placemats made from rags------

Terrariums.... PET bottles provide an ideal opportunity for children to study animal or plant
life in a terrarium situation. Terrariums may be made by either cutting off the bottom of a bottle and using the top part with the cap on or off-or, cutting off the top at the shoulder and inverting the bottom. In both cases the bottle is placed over soil in a plant pot to make the terrarium.

In eastern European countries, brides often wore heavily fringed aprons until the late 1800’s. Archeologists

shells and beads. As ancient crafts workers used the elements available to them, I added in domestic elements found today: cooking tools,
buttons and zippers. The top of the apron has photo transfers of ancient apron images.
