If we throw them out they become garbage, but if we recycle them they become a resource. coke can quilt at greg kucera gallery...Ross Palmer Beecher’s eighth one-person exhibition at the Greg Kucera Gallery included new work inspired by the American folk-art traditions of quilting, flag-making, bricolage and primitive portraiture. Beecher is not a "Folk" artist, but she is endlessly fascinated by the many forms it can take, the contexts surrounding its production, and the complete devotion to a given craft that Folk artists bring to their work. Beecher filters these traditions in making her contemporary objects. Beecher embraces her New England roots while her contemporary observations of the world are revealed through a wide variety of political and topical themes executed in her own peculiar brand of Yankee ingenuity.

Waldorf teachers believe that the human being is not just a brain - but a being with heart and limbs - a being of will and feeling, as well as of intellect. To ensure that education does not produce one-sided individuals, crippled in emotional health and volition, these less conscious aspects of our human nature must constantly be exercised, nourished, and guided. Here the arts and practical skills make their essential contribution, educating not only heart and hand but, in very real ways, the brain as well.

Isabel Castillo was born in Izucar de Matamoros, Puebla, in central Mexico. The tree of life and other figures she creates are inspired by five generations of artisans in her family. Isabel learned her art form from her mother and grandmother; the latter lived to be 115 years old. The animal and cactus candleholders in their bright and shiny colors are everyone's favorites.

The Till lynching was just one in a string of racial incidents that swept the South during the 1950s as black voting rights and public school desegregation gained momentum, yet this case had particular impact on Wisconsin artist Mona Webb, who then was living in rural Texas with her four young children.----She was a Renaissance woman at a time when mainstream society respected only Renaissance men.----Over a period of 30 years, visionary artist and mystic Mona Boulware Webb and her friends have transformed her house in Madison, Wisconsin, into an artistic environment - completely covering it with representational and expressionistic works. garden art--"Mary Nohl started circa 1928 to create a sculpture environment beside her home on the shores of Lake Michigan. The large scale figures and huge heads that she has made from cement and local stone create a very striking impression. She has also carved figures from tree trunks. The walls of her house are decorated with driftwood figures and wooden patterns. The brightly painted and patterned interior, with windows stained in bold colors, contains hundreds of mixed media works."----Souvenir of Mollie Jenson's Zoo & Museum---

The Green Inventor
Gina Gallant has always been an inventor. In first grade she invented a type of paper made from broccoli. (Really.) In fifth grade she invented a safer bike helmet. At age 15, she designed a new type of asphalt made from recycled plastic bottles.

Gina came up with her idea for "soda-pop pavement" when she and her family were riding through a place called Cash Creek in their hometown of Prince George, British Columbia. The local landfill was overflowing so badly, the family started calling the place "Trash Creek."

PURSE MADE FROM MAGAZINES

For centuries South Africa's Zulu people have been famous for the sturdy and beautiful baskets they weave from grasses and palm leaf. The weaving was so tight that the best ukhamba baskets were actually used to store beer! Today these baskets are still woven in the countryside, but the Zulus living in urban area have invented a new kind of basket, the imbenge basket woven entirely ofrecycled telephone wire. --Coiled Basket---These coiled baskets are a cinch to make. Essentially, all you have to do is to wind double strands of yarn around a core of everyday clothesline. ---These pliable baskets will soon find a home clustered on your child's dresser top, ready to be filled with everything from barrettes to bottle caps. They also make great gifts.---From Uganda thisbasket is made from banana fiber--Crafty Containers BOOK---BEAUTIFUL RECYCLED BASKET--This Zuni basket, woven using traditional coil-winding techniques, employs recycled telephone wire for dramatic and beautiful color. This kind of basket attracted a lot of attention when they first came on the scene in the early 1990s. Now, they're pretty much everywhere; a head shop within walking distance of my apartment carries a wide selection. Nonetheless a cool idea. This image is scanned from the 1996 book, Recycled Re-Seen: Folk Art fom the Global Scrap Heap--Cookie creatively recycled the top of a lotus pod from an old arrangement for the start of her basket. --DOREEN

Innovative designs utilizing recycled and everyday
materials give these baskets both flair and function.

NEW LOVE:

"I think many artists spend far too much time thinking and writing and not nearly enough time making and looking," said Steven Siegel, the professional artist who led the construction of the refuse sculpture. Siegel has installed public sculptures across the country to bring attention to human wastefulness---Having used a little more than 20,000 pounds of recycled newspaper---pod---Tire Shreds----Steven Siegel, Squeeze 2----Come un alveare, come un uovo?---- Issues concerning environmental conditions have informed the creative work of many contemporary artists and writers. For some, the effort has been undertaken as a means of suggesting solutions or, at the very least, approaches, to the pressing and critical problems making up what we refer to as "issues of the environment."1 For others, their work makes no claim to world-altering ambitions. Rather, the artworks, which are created as a result of these artists’ environmental concerns, seek to describe and illustrate the issues, informing viewers about them and predicting what certain behaviors might yield in terms of future environmental degradation-----Steven Sigel is an environmental artist whose work focuses on the transitional nature of material, especially upon the collision between the man-made and the natural. Mr. Siegel has had a prolific career constructing public art pieces composed of recyclable material such as newsprint----Outdoor Sculpture Competition---

Why not make a book?

Un libro cucito di Maria Lai

Antonio Marras, moda che diventa arte

colophon.....

Colophon: Early printed colophons included the date when printing began and/or ended, the number of copies printed and the name of the ruler under whose protection the book was issued. They are usually found on the last printed page of a book. The word colophon is derived from the Ionian city of Colophon. It was believed that the Colophonians could tip the scale of favour for whichever side of battle they fought, enabling the battle to end. Hence the phrase of Erasmus, "Colophonem adidi" ["I have put the finishing touch to it"] and its use to describe the words at the end of a book. A modern form of colophon is the production note at the end of private press books. It generally reports the typeface, point size, paper and printing press that were used, the number of copies produced and the printer's mark or device.

new love: Thomas Kovachevich: Paper/Plastic/Paint---Thomas Kovachevich has had a varied career. In addition to being an exhibiting artist who resides in New York City, he is also a practicing physician. A self taught artist, his works draw from his medical career and from common objects. Bags Of Rubbish - Discarded plastic a nightmare in India--- Apparently in the UK only one in 200 bags are recycled. Even those put in for recycling can end up merely dumped in developing countries and incinerated, because the bags are hard to recycle. Bags dumped in landfills can take up to 1,000 years to break down. ---

Folk Art and Outsider Art.....

Born in South Carolina more than 80 years ago, Wesley Stewart was taken to Florida at an early age by his mother. As an adult, he started creating artwork with toothpicks. He never thought of his creations as "art", he called them "oddities". At first he created everyday household objects ... stoves, ice boxes, record players, musical instruments; the things he lovingly remembered as a child. He worked as a messenger for a television station in Florida. When distinguished people such as Liberace or Minnie Pearl would visit, he created pianos, Minnie's famous hat and other such objects from toothpicks and would give them to visitors. His first national exposure in the art world was at the American Visionary Art Museum in its opening exhibition. A dozen pieces of his art were featured. Even though he continues to make toothpick art, most of the pieces today are relatively basic compared to the intricate sailing ships, trains, and automobiles that he fashioned in his younger days.

Bridget Baker embroidery---The starting point for Baker's Stitch was an angry letter from an ex-boyfriend, in which he repeatedly accuses Baker of running away from him. Baker, who has described her shielded upbringing in a fundamental Christian family as "monstrously idyllic", and whose adult work turns on a questioning of that past, referred to letters from the Bible to see what is said about running. The concordance lists strict admonitions of goal orientation - "Run in such a way as to get the prize," says Paul in 1 Corinthians, and "Let us run with perseverance the race". She turned to letters from sisters: "It seems to be running in the family," and her mother: "I am concerned that you are running around." --"The Official BB Project explores the nature of the art-making process as inclusive / exclusive: randomness, taking chances, voting, playing the lotto, applications to art schools, change, success and failure."
