coke can quilt at greg kucera gallery...Ross Palmer Beecher’s eighth one-person exhibition at the Greg Kucera Gallery included new work inspired by the American folk-art traditions of quilting, flag-making, bricolage and primitive portraiture. Beecher is not a "Folk" artist, but she is endlessly fascinated by the many forms it can take, the contexts surrounding its production, and the complete devotion to a given craft that Folk artists bring to their work. Beecher filters these traditions in making her contemporary objects. Beecher embraces her New England roots while her contemporary observations of the world are revealed through a wide variety of political and topical themes executed in her own peculiar brand of Yankee ingenuity. ------à-see also Chromogenic print of artist-made construction from McDonald's French fries and Heinz ketchup----jane Hammond Star Maps, Scrapbooks and Matchbooks----

Waldorf teachers believe that the human being is not just a brain - but a being with heart and limbs - a being of will and feeling, as well as of intellect. To ensure that education does not produce one-sided individuals, crippled in emotional health and volition, these less conscious aspects of our human nature must constantly be exercised, nourished, and guided. Here the arts and practical skills make their essential contribution, educating not only heart and hand but, in very real ways, the brain as well.

For centuries South Africa's Zulu people have been famous for the sturdy and beautiful baskets they weave from grasses and palm leaf. For some, the effort has been undertaken as a means of suggesting solutions or, at the very least, approaches, to the pressing and critical problems making up what we refer to as "issues of the environment."1 For others, their work makes no claim to world-altering ambitions. Rather, the artworks, which are created as a result of these artists’ environmental concerns, seek to describe and illustrate the issues, informing viewers about them and predicting what certain behaviors might yield in terms of future environmental degradation-----Steven Sigel is an environmental artist whose work focuses on the transitional nature of material, especially upon the collision between the man-made and the natural. Colophon: Early printed colophons included the date when printing began and/or ended, the number of copies printed and the name of the ruler under whose protection the book was issued. They are usually found on the last printed page of a book. The word colophon is derived from the Ionian city of Colophon. It was believed that the Colophonians could tip the scale of favour for whichever side of battle they fought, enabling the battle to end. Hence the phrase of Erasmus, "Colophonem adidi" ["I have put the finishing touch to it"] and its use to describe the words at the end of a book. A modern form of colophon is the production note at the end of private press books. It generally reports the typeface, point size, paper and printing press that were used, the number of copies produced and the printer's mark or device.

Born in South Carolina more than 80 years ago, Wesley Stewart was taken to Florida at an early age by his mother. As an adult, he started creating artwork with toothpicks. He never thought of his creations as "art", he called them "oddities". At first he created everyday household objects ... stoves, ice boxes, record players, musical instruments; the things he lovingly remembered as a child. He worked as a messenger for a television station in Florida. When distinguished people such as Liberace or Minnie Pearl would visit, he created pianos, Minnie's famous hat and other such objects from toothpicks and would give them to visitors. His first national exposure in the art world was at the American Visionary Art Museum in its opening exhibition. A dozen pieces of his art were featured. Even though he continues to make toothpick art, most of the pieces today are relatively basic compared to the intricate sailing ships, trains, and automobiles that he fashioned in his younger days.

Bridget Baker embroidery---The starting point for Baker's Stitch was an angry letter from an ex-boyfriend, in which he repeatedly accuses Baker of running away from him. Baker, who has described her shielded upbringing in a fundamental Christian family as "monstrously idyllic", and whose adult work turns on a questioning of that past, referred to letters from the Bible to see what is said about running. The concordance lists strict admonitions of goal orientation - "Run in such a way as to get the prize," says Paul in 1 Corinthians, and "Let us run with perseverance the race". She turned to letters from sisters: "It seems to be running in the family," and her mother: "I am concerned that you are running around." --"The Official BB Project explores the nature of the art-making process as inclusive / exclusive: randomness, taking chances, voting, playing the lotto, applications to art schools, change, success and failure."
